This
summer lots of styles from back
in the day are back. From the
baby doll to frayed jeans to
bathing suits, fashion has dipped
into the past for inspiration.
Of course you’ll be out
and about and since it looks
like this summer is going to
be a scorcher, your clothes
should be colourful, bright,
cool and comfortable –
key for the beating the heat.
The infamous baby doll
from the early ‘90s is
definitely a colourful and cool
must have for summer; the brighter
the colour the better. Straps
or not, to the beach (over your
swim suit) or to a party (with
jeans and heels) is my favourite
clothing item for this summer.
A bonus is that the baby doll
is the perfect item for those
of us with a chubby mid-section.
Its versatility only makes it
even more desirable for a summer
wardrobe. Another popular top
is the tunic top, which can
also be worn over a bathing
suit as a stylish cover up.
For a casual look, a tunic top,
with a beaded or sequined neckline
worn with jeans and heels.
Sparkles, beads and yes, believe
it, sequins are back!
They are all over tops and jeans
for this summer. Apart from
catching the eye, they dress
up clothing quite well (as long
as it’s not too many at
once). On tops especially in
the centre, sequined accents
or jewelled brooches add a sophisticated
touch. Or a plain baby tee and
jeans with sparkles or sequins
on them could easily be worn
to a party with, of course,
heels. They also allow you to
create your own designs by fixing
some of these ‘sparkly’
things onto clothing for a dressier
look. And you can save some
cash by doing this expensive
finishing work yourself on a
few inexpensive tops.
A lingerie look is also hot
for the summer. Once designated
for the bedroom, lingerie has
made it not only from underneath
your clothing but out onto the
road. Think silk and satin trimmed
with lace; or try a bustier
to give an instant bust line.
There’s nothing sexier
than a woman who is confident
about showing off her womanly
curves. Cleaveage-bearing rouchéd
tops with frills, are also hot
tops to have. Colours range
from the devilish red to the
ohh-so-soft pink.
Frayed
or cut up jeans, the punk style
from the ‘80s are also
back. Frayed jeans are generally
very versatile since the dress
code is determined simply by
the top, shoes and accessories
that you wear. Often it’s
the cuffs of the jeans that
are frayed along with a few
cuts on the leg of the jean.
Of all the resurrected clothes
this year, though, it’s
Bermuda shorts that have taken
over every store shelf and rack.
Although they’re not my
favourite item this summer these
but-hugging, just-above-the-knee
shorts are available in just
about every material (jeans,
cotton, and linen) in all stores.
I’d suggest wearing them
with loose sleeveless tops that
are gathered at the waist.
Generally bright colours are
great for the summer. Bold yellows,
dreamy blues and sun-kissed
orange and lime greens are very
popular. A hint of colour in
the form of a flower pin, handbag
or jewellery will add vibrancy
to an outfit. White, a fresh
and classy colour, is a must
have especially since it goes
with anything.
As
I’ve said, comfort is
most important and there is
nothing more comfortable than
a peasant skirt. They
are loose fitting but often
embellished by layers of frills
or crocheted hemlines; some
even have intricate beading
for an Indian-inspired look,
or sequins for a more flashy
touch. Whether plain white,
a bright solid colour, or multi
coloured they go perfect with
merinos, tank tops and tube
tops (or other close fitting
tops). Peasant skirts are best
worn during the day, especially
to the beach or for any other
casual hanging out with friends.
A tiered skirt also fits in
with this Bohemian chic look
as does a loose fitting pair
of capris. Flat slippers
(gold and silver are popular)
work well with these skirts.
Also in style are knee-length
full skirts and they often have
similar accents and work well
with flat shoes.
Shoes
are a big focus this summer.
Flats – ballet and
pointed - are definitely
the hottest style, but
also making a comeback
are wedged heels, which
are much more comfortable
for standing up all night
at a party. Don’t
be afraid of shoes with
stones, studs and patterns
either, since they add
a wonderful accent to
any outfit. Regular heels
or stilettos are mainstays
of any closet so don’t
forget about them! |

Hitting the Beach
You’ll be going to the
beach a lot in this heat and
you’ll need the right
swim suit. Two piece belted
swimsuits from the ‘60s
are in and boy shorts are a
good choice for suit bottoms,
whether you have a bikini or
tankini top. The shorts cover
up a lot (for those who are
a little self conscious) while
still being sexy. Worn low,
especially with a wide belt,
they can show off hips or a
small waist as well as hide
a tummy. And please…remember
the sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher)
and to cool off in the water
periodically!
For
the Gentlemen
As usual, you have it easy.
Or do you? The hard work of
getting together an outfit shouldn’t
be left up to the ladies so
take note. The #1 thing to remember
is that loose, baggy pants are
out…gone…don’t
wear them! The same is to be
said for white t-shirts and
torn jeans….those yard
clothes have got to go. Try
for a more tailored, fitted
jean, which work for almost
any occasion. For really dressy
occasions though, wear khaki
slacks or dark trousers. A nicely
fitted graphic T-shirt or short-sleeved
button shirt, with stripes,
a pattern or in a bright, crisp
colour, easily completes your
look.
Shoes, it is said, make the
man so pay careful attention
to what you wear on your feet.
Black, brown, tan or whatever
else you choose just make sure
it matches your belt. Yes, wear
a belt. Cologne is another important
part of your look. It cannot
be seen but there’s nothing
more attractive (or arousing)
than a man with a good, masculine
scent courtesy of Issey Miyake,
Calvin Klein or Jean Paul Gaultier.
If you think a girl is hugging
you to say hi, you’d better
believe that it’s really
so she can get closer to take
in your scent. But don’t
bathe in the cologne please!
Remember to keep up on your
grooming, too. Whether it’s
a regular line up and trim,
a ‘fro or cane rows keep
it tidy and looking good. Keep
it together!

Gold,
gold, gold! Belts, earrings,
bracelets and bangles,
slippers or shoes, gold
is it for Summer 2005.
Copper, brass and silver
also make an amazing addition
to an outfit.
Bangles & Bracelets:
Wear lots of them, chunky
or slim, in different
colours for a fun, funky
feel. Charm bracelets
are also a hot item.
Earrings: Stem earrings
with lots of colour and
shimmer. Also ethnic-flavoured
jewellery made of wood
or shells go well with
the Bohemian chic of peasant
skirts, flats and a tank
top.
Big sunglasses reminiscent
of the 1970s are back!

Three
Make-Up Tips For Ladies This
Summer
-
Most important, keep it light.
It’s hot and you will
be sweating. A lot of the
make-up will cause you to
sweat more and to look like
a mad woman.
-
Try to have your eye shadow
co-ordinate with your clothes.
Light, bright colours (yellows,
purples, blues) will brighten
your face and give you a fresher
feel instead of dark colours.
Keep the lips light, too.
Lovely pinks, nudes or light
brown lips are perfect for
a fresh-faced look. Use lip
gloss with a light shimmer
to give your look a flirty,
fun feel. For daily wear lip
gloss or balm with at least
SPF 15 is a must.
-
Try using coloured mascara
or eye liner instead of regular
black. More than one colour
mascara can give you a haute
couture look for night-time.
Nothing is wrong with using
black, but coloured mascara
and eye liner give a funky,
fun look for a party.
